Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) was developed by Alan Gordon. It involves retraining the brain to accurately interpret signals from the body to unlearn the brain-habit of pain. It starts with pain education on how the brain is plastic and pain is often reversible. The next step is to gather evidence that your pain is neuroplastic and reversable. Then time is spent mindfully attending to sensations through a lens of safety, addressing any emotional threats that arise and leaning towards positive sensations.
The Boulder Back Study validated PRT as the most effective treatment for chronic pain to date. It took 150 people who had back pain from any cause except cancer and those that had leg pain greater than back pain. The average length of pain was 10 years and they had to have greater than a 4 out of 10 pain. 98% of people receiving PRT, 2x /week for 4 weeks, demonstrated statistical improvement, 4 WEEKS!! 66% were pain free or nearly pain free (0-1/10 pain.) 1 year later greater than 50% continued to be pain free or nearly pain free. Can you imagine...being pain free in 1 month?
