Have you ever noticed that when you are trying to remember something you look in a particular direction? It turns out that where you look affects how you feel. Eye positions are connected to memories and feelings. The therapeutic use of eye positions can be used to quickly and effectively relieve physical and emotional pain.
Brainspotting came out of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) which is an effective and validated treatment, particularly useful treatment for PTSD. David Grand was a respected teacher of EMDR. He had a client that was an elite athlete, who has a block with a particular part of her skating routine. They had been working on it and made good progress with EMDR. He noticed that her eyes twitched at a particular point and he had her hold her gaze there. She processed for a while and then never had difficulty with that part of her routine again. He discussed it with his peers and they started trying it with their clients with great success, and brainspotting was born.
EMDR feels like fast forwarding through an issue. Brainspotting feels like unplugging it. As a consequence, the number of sessions required to gain freedom from chronic pain and other issue can be surprisingly few in number.
Pain can get to be a brain habit. Brainspotting can be used to remind the brain of what it is like to be in your body without pain.
One client stated that she read the books, understood the neuroscience of pain, Yet, her relief came only after brainspotting with me. In just a few sessions she reported being pain free and more consistently slept through the night.
